Philomel
After ‘Presentiment’, a painting by David Inshaw
Across the lawn
sun shooting its diagonals
I watch the mad cedar
my
exquisite
tongue scat-
tered song crotched
in the sour
privet.
Obelisk knobs and spiral
wired ilex box the blundering yew. Deep skirts.
They took their knives.
