Attunements

I cannot help myself
but speak to children as if they’re younger
or buy them clothes that are too big.
I confide unforgivable pain in you
while we sit next to a trampoline.
I read about the velocity of a meteor
and hear the forceful blow
of the ball inside a squash court.
I am an actor
living off character after character.
My eye, ear, nose, mouth,
they are each meaningless letters.

Janet Cheung, who spends her days writing in HTML and her evenings writing poetry, has been published by Virgo Venus Press, Drawn to the Light Press, Two Cardinals Literary, and Silly Goose Press.

Janet said this about her poem:

I’ve been reading plays lately, and borrowing that lens, the poem feels to me now like a soliloquy – though it was less an emotional expression than a conceptual play of voice and persona.
